I was recently sent this cool app for the iPhone called “Guitar Scale Trainer”, this app has a few different modes to help you learn Major, Minor, Diminished, Pentatonic etc. scales in the first position on the fretboard and associate the notes of the scales to either standard music notation or TAB. BidBox have also tied this app into the Game Center so that you can challenge your friends too.
In ‘Practice’ mode the app shows an empty fretboard and as you click on each fret on each string it displays the note on a stave above to help you can memorise it, in ‘Learn’ mode you can choose various scales and you are given one note at a time to click on so that you can remember the pattern and see the note displayed on the stave at the same time. Once you are feeling confident you can begin the challenges which display a note on the stave and you have to tab the fret/string that corresponds to the note displayed. To make it a little more fun there is a timer and your score is saved and if you wish uploaded to Game Center.
I think this app has potential for improvement, there are a couple of a niggling UI annoyances when navigating such as not being able to quit a challenge but I think it is a nice way to visually memorise scales and notes in standard notation.
